Unfortunately, we ended up on the losing end of the baseball game last night with a final score of 4-3. All in all however, the Davis Falcons played some good baseball. Stephen Skeggs made the starting line-up playing Left Field. He was one of two 6th graders that made the starting line-up and he ended up playing the entire game both offensively and defensively. Stephen made 4 plate appearances. He walked in the first two appearances and ended up going 0 for 2 on the night with a 6-3 ground out and a strike-out in his last at bat. He was however, the first base-runner of the season and scored the first run or the season after his walk in the second inning. (He batted in the 6 hole by the way). Honestly, I was mighty impressed with his aggressiveness; he got up there swinging early in each at bat. He’s never seen pitching like he saw tonight and considering that the competing pitchers were probably two years older than him, I feel like he did well at the plate.
Defensively, he didn’t see a lot of action although he chased down a gapper to Left Center Field and fired the ball from the fence right into the cut-off man’s glove.
I’m really glad he’s getting to get out there and compete against guys with more baseball experience and the ability to blow the ball by him. It will make him a better ball player.
We’re going to attempt our “official” season opener again this weekend when we are supposed to have 70 degree weather. We play on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Laurel Park which is north of Gainesville. Come on out and support us if you aren’t busy.
